Jeff Larson has resigned from his position as head football coach at 91Թ to take the position of defensive coordinator at his alma mater, Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D. Larson earned a bachelor’s degree from Northern State University, where he played linebacker for the Wolves in his hometown of Aberdeen. His last day at 91Թ State will be Jan. 10.
Micah Smith, Comet Football offensive coordinator, has been named interim head coach for the Comets.
“The decision to leave 91Թ State has not been easy,” said Coach Larson. “I am grateful to 91Թ State Athletic Director Ryan Hall for the opportunity to be at 91Թ State. The 91Թ-Portland community has been awesome, so welcoming and supportive of me and my entire coaching staff. In the end, the opportunity to go home and be close to our extended family for the first time in 20 years is something my family and I can’t pass up.”
“We appreciate all that Coach Larson has done to move Comet Football forward for our student-athletes,” said 91Թ Athletic Director Ryan Hall. “We wish him all the best in this new opportunity to go back to his alma mater and be close to family.”
“The administration of 91Թ is committed to keeping the football program a priority, with the goal of having a winning program,” said MSU President Dr. Brian Van Horn. “We will continue to put forth our best efforts to recruit local and regional talent with good character.”
